Powerguda, a village in Adilabad district Andhra Pradesh has pioneered a sale of 147 tonnes equivalent of saved carbon dioxide credits to the World Bank for $645 .
VayuGrid’s Beyond CSR & Philanthropy and Beyond Afforestation Programs, focused on small/marginal farming communities through Partner NGOs, have one clear mandate to partner with industry in India to create a Carbon Negative model with the farming community as an equity partner to take away the costs of land, while adding value to the local communities around Bioenergy.
How does planting VayuSap lead to Social Wealth within communities?
The VayuGrid will contract with local small and marginal farming communities to plant VayuSap plantations. planting and care of VayuSap plantations in village commons (not farming land) and as border or shade trees in the village is part of creating sustainable livelihood for farming communities in India from Bioenergy crops.
As part of VayuGrid’s supply chain, the communities have the option to sell the pods to the VayuGrid or opt to process into oil and use for day to day running of grid and off-grid power, irrigation and mass transportation with a carbon neutral to negative fuel, thus enabling economic activities in the area.
A mere 1,00,000 Pongamia tree planted in a village can generate nearly 25,000 tons of green manure, thus enhancing the quality of the soil, enriching productivity of other food crops.
Pongamia presents immense opportunities to create social wealth.
The chart below is a representation of the potential of social wealth that can be generated for the small farming communities in a village with 1,00, 000 VayuSap trees or Elite Pongamia.
From aggregating pods (seed with outer shell) from the trees and selling them from the third year onwards, the community can collectively earn anywhere up to Rs 25 crores in 15 years. This does not take into account income from green manure, which will be an addition.
The Social ROI for companies investing into these communities under Corporate Social Responsibility is thus very high.
